Work Experience

Work ExperienceAre you interested in gaining your work experience with us? As a vital part of a young person's education, work experience placements help shape the youth of today into the workforce of tomorrow.

As an active part of our community relations, Devon Contractors Ltd welcomes applications from students for their work experience placements. We have no set duration for the work experience placement but have found three days is about the minimum period required to get a good feel for the business.

You will probably need a week to see most of what we do, two weeks during busy periods. Most placements take place during the spring and summer terms, but we are willing to arrange placements at another time of year if appropriate.

We normally take on two work experience students every year, but there is no maximum provided we do not have more than two with us at any one time. It is best to arrange your placement dates well in advance (say 6-8 weeks) to get the dates you want.

As with any construction business, the projects we are working on at any one time are constantly changing, so if you can be a little flexible in your dates you may have a more interesting and varied time with us.

What sort of thing will I be doing?

Every placement will be different from the one before it; but most follow a general format. Normally, the first day of any placement will be spent in our offices so you are familiarised with where we are and what happens where.

You will be introduced to our key employees (don't worry, they are all quite friendly!) and your contact, who is normally a contracts manager, will explain where you will be going and what you will be doing.

During the rest of your placement, you can expect some or all of the following: Site visits to a variety of projects at varying stages of completion Experience of each stage of a typical design & build process, subject to such projects being available Shadow a contracts manager during a typical day Learn more about the legislation and contractual obligations that govern modern construction Get a taste of a commercial approach to building work Have your questions answered by those in the know!

What sort of person normally applies?

We have taken students who are at school from year 10 upwards, college students, potential apprentices, university undergraduates and graduates. There are no preconditions or requirements other than an interest in what we do and a basic level of physical mobility and endurance, although the granting of any placement at Devon Contractors is at the sole and unquestionably final discretion of the Managing Director.

How much does it cost?

Nothing at all, although you will be expected to get yourself to and from our offices every day of your placement and to provide yourself with lunch. Any specialist clothing or equipment, for safety purposes or otherwise, will be provided if required.

Longer Internships

We have in the past taken on paid interns for 6-8 week placements in our offices. It is not normally appropriate to undertake an internship purely on-site, as an apprenticeship is more suitable.

If you are interested in applying for an internship, please contact reception, leaving your details, and the appropriate member of staff will get back to you with more information.
